Rakuten Viber and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) have joined forces to launch a new channel that aims to increase public safety during the monsoon season in Nepal. This partnership underscores both organizations’ commitment to enhancing emergency preparedness and public awareness, providing vital information to at-risk communities.
The newly established NDRRMA Channel on Viber offers various features to keep users informed during natural disasters. Users will receive real-time alerts, news updates, and essential safety guidelines, ensuring they are well-prepared for emergencies, such as landslides and floods, that are common during the monsoon season.
The channel is a critical resource for the local community as people can make informed decisions to protect themselves and their loved ones with timely and accurate information. It can also be a lifeline, especially in remote areas where traditional communication methods may be less reliable.
To support the new channel’s launch, Viber and NDRRMA recently conducted a simulation involving the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), the National Emergency Operation Centre, local Chief District Officer representatives and volunteers. The successful exercise demonstrated how Viber can be utilized during an emergency, showcasing its potential to facilitate rapid and efficient response efforts.
Dr. Bhisma Kumar Bhusal, Joint Secretary at MoHA, highlighted the importance of the exercise, “Simulations like these help us streamline communication between departments, making the response time quicker and more efficient.”
David Tse, Senior Director for APAC at Rakuten Viber, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “This partnership with NDRRMA is a significant step towards enhancing public safety in Nepal. By leveraging our platform, we aim to provide crucial, real-time information to the public, helping them stay safe during the monsoon season and, hopefully, beyond.”
Dr. Dijan Bhattarai, Spokesperson and Information officer at NDRRMA added, “This channel is a valuable tool in our ongoing efforts to improve disaster preparedness and response. Now that we have a platform with Viber, we can reach a wider audience, making sure everyone has access to information they need during emergencies.”
Rakuten Viber has always been committed to helping communities stay connected and informed. This latest initiative with NDRRMA is part of Viber’s broader effort to make emergency response information more accessible and efficient, ultimately contributing to a safer and more resilient society.
